JOB VACANCIES AT UGANDA RAILWAYS CORPORATION

Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is a body corporate established under the Uganda Railways (1992) Act to construct, operate and maintain railway, marine and road services both inside and outside Uganda for the carriage of passengers and goods.

URC is reinforcing its human capital to fulfil its mandate and as a result wishes to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidate to fill the position in the Finance Department.

Accordingly, URC invites individuals with the pre-requisite qualifications to apply for the position indicated below:

POSITION: Senior Commercial Officer (SCO) – Operations
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Principal Commercial Officer
REPORTS INDIRECTLY TO: Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Managing Director
DIRECT REPORTS: 4 Commercial Officers
Indirect Reports (Numbers): 26
PURPOSE : To implement the agreed commercial strategy through coordinating the development and implementation of key commercial programmes and carrying out effective and efficient activities of promoting rail transportation in line with the Commercial strategy.
Areas of focus: Business growth, client management through planning, organizing, controlling, evaluating and reporting.
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership:
a. Source for rail transportation Business through identification of new customers and retain the existing customers
b. Implement commercial strategy for growth and profitability of the corporation
c. Adhere and monitor the agreed growth process
d. Coordinate and maintain collaborative working relationships within URC in pursuit of the overall business goals.
2. Sales:
a. Implement URC’s sales strategy across key market segments
b. Monitor the agreed channels capable of delivering on the corporation’s growth objectives
c. Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends.
3. Marketing:
a. Implement the agreed corporation’s marketing strategy so as achieve market penetration and sales growth with a particular emphasis on cost-effective customer acquisition and market demand generation.
b. Maintain and grow the freight and passenger traffic
c. Adhere and implement the URC tariffs
d. Secure and maintain friendly relations with customers and cultivating good public relations
e. Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and compile the feedback and information on market and creative trends.
4. Business Development:
a. Implement the agreed strategy and action business development opportunities.
b. Participate in Research and build/maintain relationships with all clients.
d. Consult with internal stakeholders on business trends with a view to developing new services, products, and distribution channels
e. Coordinate and organize regular performance evaluation in line with the developed monitoring and evaluation framework.
f. Participate in the design of performance improvement programmes/initiatives and innovations and continuous review of the Corporation’s Strategy
g. Participate in the development and review of commercial programs assessment systems.
h. Carryout regular updates and documentation and reporting of performance improvement related programs and activities. 7
5. Work force management:
a. Manage work flow as per the labor laws through HR planning, talent/succession planning, change and performance management to realize the preferred strategic agenda.
b. Ensure all team members represent the corporation in the best light
c. Plan for business development training and mentoring
6. Reporting:
a. Prepare weekly, monthly and annual reports as stipulated
b. Compile report inputs as required for Ministry of Work and Transport, Northern and Central corridor Authorities and any other agency.
C. Forecast revenue targets and ensure they are met by the team.
7. Additional tasks: Execute any other tasks assigned by management from time to time.
MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
A graduate Degree in Business Management, Marketing or related discipline.
A Postgraduate qualification in Marketing, Project management or Management.
Affiliation to a professional body will be an added advantage.

• Over three (3) years of post qualification experience in a vibrant organization
• Actively having participated in implementation of Business, Marketing and Communication plans

• Demonstrated experience in implementation of successful commercialization strategies in early-stage companies
• Outstanding sales management skill
• Strong negotiation and analytical skills
• Data analysis and synthesis under pressure.

2.JOB DESCRIPTION SENIOR OFFICERS
POSITION: Marketing Officer (MO) – Relations
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Senior Commercial Officer – Marketing and Sales
REPORTS INDIRECTLY TO: Principal Commercial Officer, Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Managing Director
DIRECT REPORTS: Freight Agents, Assistant Freight Agents, Barrier clerks and clearing clerks
Indirect Reports (Numbers): 13
PURPOSE : To implement the agreed commercial strategy through coordinating the development and implementation of key commercial programmes and carrying out effective and efficient activities of promoting rail transportation in line with the Commercial strategy.
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
2. Sales:
a. Grow clients existing business in line with URC set growth targets
b. Follow up payments for services provided and invoiced out
c. Monitor the agreed channels capable of delivering on the corporation’s growth objectives
d. Establish customer requirements and provide information for decision making and preparation of sales reports
e. Participate in industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends.
f. Consult with mid and senior level management on business trends with a view to developing new services, products, and distribution channels.
3. Marketing:
a. Negotiate customer agreements on assets turnaround time within the approved corporation standards.
b. Market and grow the freight and passenger traffic
c. Adhere and implement the URC tariffs
d. Secure and maintain friendly relations with customers and cultivating good public relations
e. Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and compile the feedback and information on market and creative trends.
f. Manage customer care in line with the corporation’s policy to ensure customer delight
4. Relationship management:
a. Implement the agreed communication strategy and action issues and challenges raised by the customers.
b. Participate in building and maintaining relationships with all current and potential clients
d. Consult with internal stakeholders on business trends with a view to developing new services, products, and distribution channels
e. Coordinate and organize regular customer satisfication surveys in line with the developed monitoring and evaluation framework.
f. Participate in the design of customer retention programmes/initiatives and innovations and continuous review of the Corporation’s reputational image to the customers
g. Participate in the development and review of commercial programs assessment systems.
h. Carryout regular updates and documentation and reporting of performance improvement related programs and activities

PURPOSE : To facilitate the Business Development activities through coordinating the development and implementation of key innovative programmes and carrying out rail transportation activities in line with the Commercial strategy.
Areas of focus: New Business Development, client management, planning, research and compilation of Rail Commercial statistics.
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership:
a. Prospect for potential revenue streams and turn this into increased business.
b. Identify potential clients and the decision makers within the client organization.
c. Research and build relationships with new clients.
d. Set up meetings between client decision makers and company’s practice leaders/Principals.
e. Develop and maintain a credible and robust operating performance data base to enable comprehensive assessment of company operational efficiency and management decision support.
f. Monitor the agreed growth process and infrastructure.
g. Carry out regular assessments of Departments and individuals on the level of compliance to the commercial strategy
2. Sales:
a. Ensure that the corporation’s sales strategy across key market segments is implemented
b. Monitor the agreed channels capable of delivering on the corporation’s growth objectives.
C. Participate in pricing the services
d. Handle objections by clarifying, emphasizing agreements and working through differences to a positive conclusion
e. Attend industry functions, such as association events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on market and creative trends
f. Research and develop a thorough understanding of the corporation’s people and capabilities.
3. Business Development:
a. Implement the agreed strategy and action business development opportunities.
b. Participate in Research and build/maintain relationships with all clients.
d. Consult with internal stakeholders on business trends with a view to developing new services, products, and distribution channels
e. Coordinate and organize regular performance evaluation in line with the developed monitoring and evaluation framework.
