Rehabilitation of Malaba – Mukono

In 2020, the Government of Kenya embarked on revitalization of the Meter gauge railway (MGR) network in Kenya including construction of the railway spur between Naivasha and Longonot to connect the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the Meter Gauge Railway as well as the Rehabilitation of the Longonot – Malaba railway section.

Upon completion of the aforementioned works in Kenya, the Malaba – Kampala Railway section is now the only constraint in terms of track availability on the entire Mombasa – Kampala Railway line (Northern Railway Transport Corridor) due to its current poor state. For seamless connection between the two networks upon completion of the Longonot – Malaba Railway line, an intervention for the Kampala – Malaba railway section was imperative.

The Government of Uganda through Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has engaged M/s China Road and Bridge Corporation for expediency to undertake the rehabilitation works for the Tororo – Namanve section since they were the same contractor that undertook the railway rehabilitation works in Kenya and are already mobilized for the works.

The project cost is USD 51.8 Million with a duration of 16 months including the defects liability period. Summary scope for Proposed Interim Intervention The project scope under the Intervention shall be limited to the following sections; Namanve – Tororo (222 Km), Jinja Pier Line including reinstatement of the pier yard (3.7 Km) for a total track length of 234 Km that includes the crossing lines (8.3 Km).

The project scope shall include; Drainage Improvement, Track Formation Improvement, Girder Bridge repairs, Ballasting, Supply and Fixing of Track fasteners, Re-sleepering and Re-railing for priority sections, Reconditioning of Track Components and Level Crossing reconstruction.
